What help looks like in Madison County

Two kinds of help move through this county. Organizations here — food banks, shelters, senior centers, animal rescues, a community action agency, churches — need the same things week after week, and say so on their own volunteer pages. Neighbors need one-off things: a ride, a meal, a hand with a limb down across the drive.

Food boxes and pantry hours

Packing grocery boxes for pickup, working walk-through pantry hours, sorting and repacking donations, and filling the weekly backpack bags that go home with kids at Madison County schools.

Meals for older neighbors

A hot midday meal driven out to someone who cannot get to the table on their own, and a hand with activities at the senior centers in Richmond and Berea.

Richmond, Berea, and the county around them

Richmond is the seat of Madison County and its largest town, and Eastern Kentucky University sits in the middle of it — so the population here swells and thins with the academic year in a way the rest of the county does not.

Berea is about fifteen minutes south on I-75 and is not a Richmond suburb. It has its own college, its own downtown, its own food bank and senior center, and its own page here. Waco, Kirksville, and the county roads in between belong to neither town.

A lot of the organizations doing this work are county-wide rather than town-based — the animal shelter, the community action agency, food banks that serve Madison alongside Estill and Jackson counties. Help in Madison County routinely crosses the town line, which is why there is a county page as well as this one.
